Do you remember starting back to school each fall and writing the first essay about “What I did on Summer Vacation”?

Here’s what I did/am doing/want to keep doing more and more forever and ever:

Read books- So far I have read The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead,  When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, Nature Doctors: Pioneers in Naturopathic Medicine, by Friedhelm Kirchfeld, and Wade Boyle,  Wash and Be Healed: The Water-Cure Movement and Women’s Health, by Susan E. Cayleff, and Sherman Alexie’s You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me. I am very excited to start my friend Andrew Sean Greer’s new book Less which was just released yesterday!

Restorative Self Care Practices– For me just being in Montana is so wonderful. Have you ever seen the structure of the inside of your bones? They are very porous like a sponge. When I’m in Montana I feel that the very landscape is slowly filling up the spongy part of my bones. It is part of who I am. My very structure that keeps me upright.

Other practices I have been engaging with: yoga, blogilates, (thanks for that one Halley Lopez!), hiking. I think the most restorative thing I have done is to sit and stare into the woods/grass/water/sky and empty my mind. That is nature cure.

Water cure- I LOVE water. In almost any form.  Well maybe not a flood. And it would be great if the garbage disposal on the sink would work so that the gross water goes DOWN the drain. But generally if I can be near/in water I am a happy person. So far I have been in the Clark Fork and Blackfoot rivers, Rattlesnake and Kootenai creeks, Lac Facile (at our rental house-after getting out of the Far Infra Red sauna that Yes, indeed I did bring with me on vacation! I mean, it’s portable!). Check out this video of me in my happy place.

Deliciousness-You might be wondering what I’ve been eating this summer? Well just before vacation I bought a new cookbook. I rarely buy cookbooks anymore, but this one has been blowing me away. It’s called Six Seasons; A New Way With Vegetables, by Joshua McFadden. Every single thing I have made so far has been stunningly delicious and healthy! Organized by what vegetables are in season it is a perfect companion to farmer’s market cooking!

In July it’s pretty easy to eat what is seasonal, delicious, and feels good in my body! And here’s the bounty that the earth offered up the other day!

Let’s also not underestimate the joy of eating with good friends- new and old!

Atmospheric Therapy- in the Nature Doctors book I learned about Arnold Rikli who wrote, Basic Doctrines of Nature Cure including The Atmospheric Cure where he advocates the air bath, the light bath, and the sun bath (also known as heliotherapy). He writes, ” Man (sic) is not born in clothes but is destined to live like a walking plant in light and air. Indeed, he is the noblest light-air creature on earth… Light and air, the finer fluids of life, will tremendously enhance the development of body and mind (Rikli 1896-p 62)”.  Adolph Just says, “Going naked temporarily… in the open air, in the woods, proves of wonderful benefit and efficacy and is more strengthening than any other means(Just 1903).

Watching- most of the time you will find me watching the woodpecker, the chipmunks, the hummingbirds, the butterflies, bunnies, deer. The occasional fox will trot by, or a family of wild turkeys. My friend saw a mountain lion! But because of all the outside dining with the ever growing table of guests, I was reminded of an old favorite movie- Antonia’s Line. And every now and again I will watch Lin Manuel Miranda’s video (Hamilton Mixtape)  Immigrants. Every time I hear/watch it I catch something new.

Drinking- I am loving hanging out at Lake Missoula Tea House, for their wide selection of delicious teas, and also have been brewing up batches at home. My latest delight was a white tea chai that I made really strong, then added ice and sparkling water. Amazing!

Another favorite beverage for these hot summer days is thanks to my friend Lisa Levine at Audacious Health and Wellness– in your quart mason jar, add a generous splash of apple cider vinegar, a couple drops of your favorite (safe for internal use) essential oil, a few drops of liquid stevia, and fill the rest of the jar with your favorite sparkling water. Tangy and sweet at the same time! It feels super hydrating and very refreshing!

Essential Oils-What oils do I find myself turning to these days? Lots of lime oil- in sparkling drinks, in ceviche, in guacamole, even in iced coffee sodas (yum!), Terra-shield both at night and during the day to keep the flies and other bugs at bay. Often I will add Cedarwood and Lemongrass to make the anti-bug effect even stronger! After a day of heliotherapy (sun) I will add a few drops of Lavender, Frankincense, and Peppermint to my unscented lotion and it soothes and heals the effects of the sun. And of course I use Past Tense, Peppermint, Deep Blue for any aches and pains after a long hike or yoga practice! Retreat/Restore/Release- Practicing and teaching TRE while I’m here has been delightful. I truly believe that if we pay attention to the basics: Eat close to nature, release stress, rest and restore, surround yourself with nature and loved ones… wellness and health are the natural state! One of the primary foundations of Naturopathic Medicine is Vis Medicatrix Naturae or “the healing power of nature.” Our job as doctors is to stimulate and awaken the Vis in each patient, so the healing can occur.

Who doesn’t love a chia pudding?  And seriously, folks are going crazy for pumpkin pie everything! What we have here is a super tonic, super nutritious, super delicious and filling pudding! High in easy to digest proteins fat and fiber, and low in sugar. This is a delicious, filling, and highly nutritious snack!

1 can pumpkin puree

1 can full fat coconut milk

6 medjool dates (soaked for 10 min in boiling water and drained)

2 squirts liquid stevia

4 T coconut sugar

1/2 tsp sea salt

1 T ground turmeric (anti-inflammatory boost) 

1 T ground Eleutherococcus-a gentle adaptogen herb to help with stress response (I get mine here)

6 drops cinnamon essential oil (Certified Pure, Therapeutic Grade oils only-you can purchase here)

2 T ground ginger (anti-inflammatory boost)

1/4 tsp ground cloves

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1 scoop unflavored Whey Protein powder (I use this brand) 

2 scoops Collagen Peptides (I use this brand)

2/3 cup chia seeds

Add all ingredients except the chia seeds to a blender or food processor. Blend on high speed until fully smooth. Add chia seeds and pulse to gently mix in. Spoon into jars or serving dishes. Let set up for 1-2 hours. Serve with cocoa nibs and unsweetened shredded coconut.

Turmeric Ginger Switchel

Turmeric Ginger Switchel

 

Excited to share my new favorite summer drink! Why Turmeric? In botanical medicine it goes by it’s Latin name, Curcuma Longa. It is a member of the ginger family and is a rhizome that looks like ginger, but is bright orange/yellow. The orange color is the carotenoid called ‘curcumin’ which is responsible for the amazing health benefits including high antioxidant power. Turmeric is wonderful for soothing and quenching all sorts of inflammation. We now understand that inflammation is at the root of many common chronic illnesses. It has anti-cancer as well as brain protective benefits. With dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases on the rise, I am definitely looking for prevention strategies, especially ones that taste so good! If you are looking for a way to add delicious supercharged nutrition to your life, you can’t go wrong with Turmeric!

It is also slightly bitter, and a warming, stimulating herb which helps with bile production, and can support healthy cholesterol levels. We know it is absorbed best when in the presence of black pepper. In this recipe I use doTERRA black pepper essential oil which is really mild and adds a great balance to the flavor.

IMG_2311Ginger is a natural companion to turmeric. Very anti-inflammatory itself, it also helps with digestion, has anticancer benefits too. Ginger has been shown to reduce migraine pain and menstrual cramps. This is powerful kitchen medicine! A switchel is an old fashioned beverage using apple cider vinegar with some sort of sweetener- commonly honey, maple syrup, or molasses. I will be experimenting with using a xylitol simple syrup to reduce the glycemic impact of the switchel. However, the amount of honey used in this recipe is relatively small, and the switchel is diluted with still or sparkling water, so the sugar content is much lower than most commercially available sodas and drinks.

Here is the recipe:

Equal parts fresh turmeric and ginger juice. I juiced them in my champion juicer, however if you do not have a juicer you can grate them on a fine, microplane grater, and then add the freshly grated roots to the apple cider vinegar mixture. When you serve it you will just want to strain it first. So you can scale this recipe as you want, but for this example let’s say we have 1/4 cup combined turmeric and ginger juices. fresh turmeric and ginger juice

To this you will add 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon, lime or a combo of juice.

Then add 3/4 cup Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

Then stir in your sweetener. I used honey in mine and I used 1/2 cup. You may like it more or less sweet and you can adjust to your taste. honey

4 drops black pepper essential oil

Stir all together. This makes the base of your switchel drink. It is very strong by itself. To serve, add 2-3 Tablespoons to a 12 oz glass filled with ice and either still or sparkling water. It is also delicious added to summer cocktails! Be aware that the Turmeric can stain anything it comes in contact with!

If you have your finger on the pulse of what’s new in Natural Medicine you’ve probably heard about oil pulling.  Folks are talking about it, blogging about it, making you tube videos about it.  There is great debate about it.  Is it the magical cure-all or a complete waste of time?  But first of all what exactly IS oil pulling?

Oil pulling has its roots in Ayurvedic medicine but was made popular by Dr. F. Karach, M.D. in the 1990’s.  The technique involves taking 1 tablespoon of oil (most commonly cold pressed sesame, coconut or sunflower oil) into the mouth and vigorously swishing the oil through the teeth and gums for 20 minutes, then spitting it out and washing the mouth with water and brushing the teeth. The claim is that during this process toxins are pulled from the blood into the viscous oil and then expelled with the oil. There are many anecdotal claims on the internet that this practice not only is good for oral hygiene (cures gingivitis and bad breath, whitens teeth), but that it can cure chronic diseases such as blood disorders, arthritis, hormonal dysregulation, sinusitis, immune disorders and cancer.

Let’s face it:  I’m a sucker for crazy ritualized health routines.  I mean I have fully embraced the castor oil pack, dry skin brushing, jumping into cold water,eating organ meats, and more.  So when I first heard about oil pulling from an interview with Bruce Fife ND, I was intrigued!  Sign me up!  I’ll try it!  I could not think of any reason it would be a BAD idea to swish oil around your mouth.  If nothing else, perhaps we absorb some good fatty acids through the mucus membranes in our mouth.

I do know that our mouths often harbor plenty of bacteria on a good day, and on a bad day can be the source of ongoing, hidden infections that the body has to  continually fight off.    Having a low grade infection takes lots of energy to keep the immune system so revved up and can lead to further complications.   Coconut oil is especially antimicrobial, so there’s that.   With my training in physiology I can’t say that I buy into the idea that toxins are being “pulled” into the saliva/oil mixture through this process.  But I am the first to admit that there is a lot we don’t know about the human body and I don’t need to understand something for it to benefit me.  I mean, I practice homeopathy after all!

So I have been practicing oil pulling with coconut oil (I am a big fan of the many health benefits of coconut oil and I buy it here) and a few drops of On Guard Essential oil (from doTERRA which you can buy here).  Essential oils are some of the most potent antimicrobial agents (antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal), and have many antioxidant qualities as well. Adding essential oils to my oil pulling regime helps with bacteria in the mouth which cause tooth decay and inflammation.  I do it once a day, in the morning, on an empty stomach. The first thing I noticed was that my teeth feel like I just came from a dental cleaning appointment.  Smooth!  Clean!  Sexy!  I’m watching my receding gums and hoping to see a change there.  My chronic back and hip pain is improved (!).  I don’t suffer from allergies or chronic sinusitis, but I do feel my sinuses drain each time I do it.

I’m convinced it is a wonderful addition to my self-care routine.  Give it a try and tell me what you think!

IMG_1156With spring equinox right around the corner, and the early sunny weather that we have been having in Portland, daffodils are out, magnolias are blooming early, my vitamin D levels are rising, and my thoughts are turning to new beginnings.  While I didn’t study acupuncture in school, I did study shiatsu, auricular therapy, and now am learning Aroma Acupoint Therapy which is a beautiful marriage of my love of essential oil therapeutics with the theory and energetics of Chinese Medicine. I am grateful to my teachers Diane Del Reyes, Peter Holmes, and Tiffany Pollard for this beautiful and effective therapy. Using Aroma Acupoint Therapy in my practice is teaching me more about the energetics of the seasons.In Chinese Five Element Theory, Spring brings rising Yang Wood energy. After the dark, yin winter when plants have been preserving their energies, spring is a time of new growth, buds, shoots, upward motion. The wood element is associated with liver and gallbladder organs which are in charge of strategic planning, and judicious decision making energies respectively.  So spring is a time of new energies bursting forth, ideally with some vision and planning to guide the energy. What happens if there is the upward surging momentum and nowhere to channel that energy? In this case someone might feel agitation or irritability; anger is the emotion associated with a liver out of balance. What can we do to support this transition from winter to spring, to align ourselves with the natural up and out energy of nature, and to use this momentum for planting seeds for our envisioned future with the confidence to push forth?  Can we allow ourselves to engage in a surge of newness and hope?

  • Take walks outdoors. Feel the sunshine, notice the new leaves, shoots, and blooms. 
  • Spring Clean your house! Make room for fresh air and energy to circulate, clearing out stagnation and allowing space for new ideas, people and things to come into your life. 
  • Spring Clean your body! Focus on foods that support the liver: Green leafies, especially bitter ones (endive, romaine, dandelion greens). Citrus fruits. Diakon Radish. Artichoke.
